A 28-year-old man was convicted Friday of the 2003 gang-related murder of two men in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Cook County Judge Dennis Dernbach found Emanuel Rivera-Martinez guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Mario Montanez and Freddy Hurtado, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

Rivera-Martinez, then 23, of the 3600 block of West Dickens fatally shot Montanez, 23, and Hurtado, 22, near Fullerton and Lawndale on Nov. 15, 2003. At the time of the shooting, police said Rivera was believed to be a member of the Spanish Cobras gang and the victims were suspected Imperial Gangsters.

Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 30, Simonton said.
